The Royal Navy has given the name ‘HMS Exeter’ to 5 ships since 1680.

Named after the City of Exeter in Devon, ships of this name have been involved in some of the most famous actions, including the Battle of the River Plate in Uruguay in which the German heavy cruiser ‘Admiral Graf Spee’ was scuttled.

More recently, as a Type 42 Destroyer, Exeter was a part of the naval task force sent to regain the Falkland Island after the invasion by Argentina. During the conflict she shot down 4 aircraft of the Fuerza Aérea Argentina.

HMS Exeter was decommissioned in May 2009 after 31 years of Service.

Her Motto was Semper Fidelis (“Always faithful”)
