Initially formed in 1916 as 47 Squadron RFC as a home defence Squadron, the Squadron was split with some joining 33 Squadron and the remainder being sent to Greece.
Surprisingly, the Squadron was involved in the Russian Revolution being sent to Southern Russia in support of the White Russian forces. Although ostensibly to provide training, the Squadron was involved in operational duties.
From 1920 to 1946 the squadron was equipped with Fighter/Ground Attack aircraft such as the Beaufighter and the Mosquito.
In 1946 the Squadron became a Transport Squadron, fielding the HP Hastings, with which it took part in the Berlin Airlift.
47 Squadron became the first in the Royal Air Force to equip with the Blackburn Beverly, and operated the type until its withdrawal in 1967, and the Squadron was disbanded.
The Squadron reformed in 1968 to operate the Lockheed Hercules, which it does to this day.
